Maslow Predicted The Shift
by Owen Waters
Abraham Maslow (1908-70) was a psychologist who became famous for his hierarchy of human needs. When he developed his theory in the 1950s, he predicted the transformation of humanity into a realm of spiritual transcendence, but he had no idea just how soon this would develop into a major movement.
Maslow's hierarchy of human needs shows that basic human needs have to be fulfilled before people can attend to higher needs and values.
First, the basic physiological needs of food and shelter must be catered for in order to ensure survival.
Second, once food and shelter are obtained, safety and security must be achieved.
Third, acceptance by others is sought, in both the social and romantic senses. To fulfill this 'belonging' need, people become part of a group, a tribe, an extended family or a community.
When these deficiency, or outer-directed, needs are satisfied, then the individual works to acquire self-respect.
Recognition by others produces self-esteem.
Once the outer needs are fulfilled, the inner-directed need for self-actualization comes into play. To self-actualize means to become the best you personally can be.
Self-actualized people include those who have achieved material abundance, and also those who, as a decision of personal power, have chosen simplicity over the pursuit of further abundance. At some point, when a person says "That's enough" to the endless pursuit of additional financial security, then they become free to accomplish anything that inspires their inner joy the most.
Self-actualization is achieved after the individual ceases to have deference to hierarchical authority, and instead matures into the ability to make their own rules of personal responsibility. Personal responsibility is always more powerful and effective than any system of imposed rules.
For example, you can threaten to punish someone if they steal and hope that the threat works. But, a self-responsible person simply wouldn't steal because they would feel empathy for the loss that a would-be victim would feel. They simply wouldn't have the heart to do such a thing to another person.
It's a matter of increased maturity. When a person abandons the impositions of external authority and becomes their own, self-directed authority, then they become far more functional in the world. This is, in fact, a higher state of consciousness, one which provides a higher vista of awareness. From this expanded vista, they see clearly how they as an individual can best serve humanity.
In this state of awareness, the person acquires the ability to think and analyze situations independently. As a result, new and creative solutions spring to mind. They have enough self-esteem to be able to clearly see their own needs, skills, strengths and weaknesses, and from that they see where they can best be of service to humanity.
Once basic needs are fulfilled, the next values to require attention relate to being. The first of these being-values is self-actualization, which is the instinctual need of a human to make the most of their unique abilities.
Above that, Maslow placed transcendence, which he considered a spiritual value. Traditional universities typically presume that spiritual matters are beyond the understanding of their students, so they present the Maslow hierarchy of human needs differently. They present it with self-actualization as the ultimate human goal, and omit the transcendence stage beyond that.
The being-values of self-actualization and transcendence are the higher, more beautiful aspects of human consciousness.
They include unconditional love, altruism, inner joy, a love of nature, the development of intuition (in males as well as females), idealism, and a sense of wisdom which springs from within. These skills develop the right-brain functions of creativity and intuition.
In the 1950s, Maslow believed that only 2% of the population had achieved self-actualization. The mid-1960s changed all that when masses of people began the search for the higher values, such as unconditional love and spiritual wisdom.
Today, that core group of progressive society has blossomed from 2% to over 20%, and is climbing every year.
The Shift is not a temporary by-product of the baby boom generation, or any other generation of modern society.
It is not a passing fad. It is not going away. It is a cosmic pressure that is unfolding and relentlessly increasing the frequency of all consciousness upon the planet.
It is a part of the plan of Infinite Being that we progress to the next stage of conscious human achievement. The Shift is, to put it simply, the most wonderful transformation in recorded history. This is where humanity gets to build, literally, Heaven on Earth.

The mysteries of life are found within the relationships
we experience through all the opportunities we encounter.
This journey starts with 'Knowing Thyself'
and expands through all levels of our existence.
The ebb and flow is the balance of the choices we make which
shapes who we are and the life we choose to live.
The journey of life shapes thy spirit
and brings forth our unique, creative expression. ~

Happiness is when what you think, what you say, and what you do are in harmony. ~ Gandhi
As you simplify your life, the laws of the universe will be simpler. ~
Henry David Thoreau
The man who makes everything that leads to happiness depend upon himself, and not upon other men, has adopted the very best plan for living happily. ~
Plato
People say that what we’re all seeking is a meaning for life. I don’t think that’s what we’re really seeking.
I think that what we’re seeking is an experience of being alive, so that our life experiences on the purely physical plane will have resonances within our own innermost being and reality,so that we actually feel the rapture of being alive. ~ Joseph Campbell, Power of Myth
He who is not everyday conquering some fear has not learned the secret of life. ~ Ralph Waldo Emerson
What I really lack is to be clear in my mind what I am to do, not what I am to know, except in so far as a certain knowledge must precede every action. The thing is to understand myself, to see what God really wishes me to do: the thing is to find a truth which is true for me, to find the idea for which I can live and die. ... I certainly do not deny that I still recognize an imperative of knowledge and that through it one can work upon men, but it must be taken up into my life, and that is what I now recognize as the most important thing. ~ Søren Kierkegaard
“To understand the heart and mind of a person, look not at what he has already achieved, but at what he aspires to do.” ~ Kahlil Gibranl
Make the most of yourself, for that is all there is of you. ~ Ralph Waldo Emerson
To know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded. ~
Ralph Waldo Emerson
"Ultimately, man should not ask what the meaning of his life is, but rather he must recognize that it is he who is asked. Each man is questioned by life and can only answer to life by answering for his own life, by being responsible. Irresponsibleness is the essence of human existence." ~ Victor Frankl
Try not to become a man of success, but rather try to become a man of value. ~ Albert Einstein
Live as if you were to die tomorrow. Learn as if you were to live forever. ~
Gandhi
Character is higher than intellect. A great soul will be strong to live as well as think. ~
Ralph Waldo Emerson
People are like dirt. They can either nourish you and help you grow as a person or they can stunt your growth and make you wilt and die. ~ Plato
All our progress is an unfolding, like the vegetable bud, you have first an instinct, then an opinion, then a knowledge, as the plant has root, bud and fruit. Trust the instinct to the end, though you can render no reason. ~ Ralph Waldo Emerson
We can easily forgive a child who is afraid of the dark; the real tragedy of life is when men are afraid of the light. ~
Plato
Be not simply good; be good for something. ~
Henry David Thoreau
I know of no more encouraging fact than the unquestioned ability of a man to elevate his life by conscious endeavor. ~

There is no greatness where there is no simplicity, goodness and truth. ~

Quest of Life
My Journey started with an intuitive relationship with the nature of horses which later expanded to include an understanding of the natural laws of this time and space. Through my working relationship with animals and nature, I developed an acute intellectual understanding that was further amplified by my intuitive knowing to see into complicated, interconnected dynamics that exist in all relationships. My journey has traveled from big cities to small towns, from mainland to remote islands, from northern hemisphere to the southern, from west to east, from the beach to the mountains, and from urban to country. I have traveled through the heart of darkness and climbed the mountain tops to experience the many levels of life. Through my experiences I have come to know that the balanced inner relationship is key to moving beyond surviving in this world to Thrive Right Now!
The Truth that I embrace from my many adventures is that when we clean our psyche and clear our lives, we gain a stronger foothold to navigate this experience that we call life. To live the ‘happy life’ and experience to deepest levels of being begins with a healthy relationship with our selves first and then expands through all the relationships we choose to keep. Since life is interconnected at the utmost energetic level, it's vital to reweave all aspects of life to hold integrity with our core essence in order to fully embrace our highest and most brilliant expression.
Each journey is different; therefore every life is defined by the spirit that shapes it, and in return the life experienced shapes the spirit. This is an ever evolving process. No path or moment is like another. Each is called to learn and grow through all experiences by rising above the immediate of any situation to gain a more complete perspective embracing all potentials. No event is random or meaningless. We decide our own future and our own lives every step of the way. Our discomforts are opportunities to create a better life, and thus a better world.
My challenge to you is to consider what choices you are currently making, what relationships are you keeping and what life do you really want to embrace? When it is all said and done when this journey is over, have you lived the life you wanted to live? Given the choice… what would you do to Thrive Right Now?
